Pewaukee water softeners, set to the system that serves you
Pewaukee is two water utilities, not one. The City and the Village each run their own system, with seventeen wells between them and no lake water bought by either. Before anyone talks about a softener, it helps to know which system reaches your tap.

Two utilities answer to the name Pewaukee
Pewaukee's City and Village each run a separate water utility: same name, different wells, different reports. Your water bill shows which one serves you. If your house has its own well, neither one does.
Between them the two systems pump seventeen municipal wells, from 153 feet to 1,415 feet deep. The Wisconsin DNR lists both as 100% groundwater, and neither buys water from another supplier. The hardness comes with the aquifer under Pewaukee. It is not a passing phase.
The City prints a hardness figure for each service area
Most utilities publish a single hardness number and leave the arithmetic to you. The City of Pewaukee breaks its figure out by service area, and it says it does that so residents can set their softeners.
East Side system: 338 mg/L, about 19.8 grains per gallon. West Side and Highlands system: 345 mg/L, about 20.2 grains. Both are far past 180 mg/L, where the USGS scale begins to call water very hard.
Those two City figures sit close together, so on City water the side of town matters less than the utility itself. Confirm which system your address is on, then treat its number as the starting point.
Village water covers a wider range
In its 2022 Water System Master Plan, the Village of Pewaukee recorded 280 to 380 mg/L from its wells and at its entry point. In grains, that is 16.4 to 22.2, a wider spread than the City's pair of figures.
The same plan calls the Village's everyday water issues aesthetic ones: iron, dissolved solids, chlorides and manganese. Iron has measured as high as 0.26 mg/L, a little under the 0.3 level where staining begins to show. If you are already seeing stains, mention it when you call.
With a range that wide, a Village quote leans on the reading at your own tap more than on any single published number.
Homes that drain to the Waukesha sewer
According to the City of Waukesha, its softener salt program reaches any softener draining into the Waukesha sewer system, and that includes homes in parts of Pewaukee. The rule follows where your drain goes, not where your water comes from.
Any softener running on that sewer, new ones too, must be optimized, and only a company on Waukesha's approved list can do it. Waukesha notes the optimizer may bill for that visit, and that bill is not part of our price. If your address drains to the Waukesha sewer, tell us at the start of the call, before you agree to anything.
Common questions
Is Pewaukee water hard enough to need a softener?
Every published figure from both utilities is above the USGS very-hard line of 180 mg/L, which is 10.5 grains. The City's numbers are 19.8 and 20.2 grains, and the Village's run from 16.4 to 22.2. Whether to soften is your decision, and the call gives you a straight answer and one price to decide with.
Does it matter whether I'm on the City's East Side or West Side system?
Very little. The two City figures, 19.8 and 20.2 grains, are close. What matters more is whether your water comes from the City, the Village or a private well, since the Village range starts lower and ends higher than either City number.
What about the radionuclide treatment the utilities are building?
Both Pewaukee utilities are working through radionuclide compliance, which traces to natural erosion of the deep aquifer, and both are building treatment for it. That work belongs to the utilities, and we do not use it to sell softeners. A softener quote from us is about hardness, nothing else.
Will someone come to my house to sell me a system?
No. You hear the price on the phone, and the first knock on your door is the plumber's, on the day the softener goes in.
Does the drinking tap cost extra?
No. The kitchen-sink drinking tap, a reverse-osmosis unit, is bundled into each whole-home softener and never sold without one.
